A RICH HERITAGE - A VIBRANT FUTURE

Stop sign changes around the Providence Elementary block effective 8/11

August 11, 2021

NOTE: These changes are currently in effect as of 8/11/2021

As you might know the city has recently completed the reconstruction of 100 East between Center Street and 100 North. With the completion of this reconstruction and the adoption of our Transportation Master Plan we are making a few changes in stop signs in the area around Providence Elementary. We wanted these changes to be in-place before school starts and so we are letting you know. At this time, this will not affect the placement of crossing guards.

The first change will be to make 100 North and 100 East a four way stop intersection. This is needed since 100 North and 100 East are both classified as Major Collector roads. To promote traffic to our Major Collector roads we will work to reduce the number of stops on those roads and stop traffic entering the higher classification of roads. We want all to be safe and aware of the changes.

The second change is to change 100 North and Main Street from a 4-way stop intersection to a two way stop, with stop signs on Main St, allowing through traffic on 100 North.

The third change will be to change the two way stop controlled intersection on 100 East and Center from stopping traffic on 100 East to stopping traffic on Center Street. We would expect traffic coming to the intersection from the bench on Center Street to turn right on to 100 East rather than going straight through on Center Street, unless the traffic is dropping students off in front of the school. We expect that this will be both safer and more efficient.

As we complete the upgrades to 100 South, 200 South, 300 South, and 100 West, there will be additional changes to be in line with the Transportation Master Plan.
